A Dispute Ends With a Woman Fatally Shot and Her Roommate in Custody

Los Angeles:  The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Southwest Criminal Gang Homicide Group detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing details involving a shooting that left a South Los Angeles woman dead.

On May 16, 2025 at around 6:30 p.m., Southwest Patrol officer received a call of a shooting in the 3000 block of South 11th Avenue where they discovered a woman in the front yard of the house on the ground with gunshot wounds to her head.

Detectives say that 55-year-old Carolyn Lovett returned to a house where she had been temporarily staying in the 3000 block of South 11th Avenue.  She left the house due to an argument that ensued earlier that day with her 82-year-old friend and roommate Lloyd Wade.  When she returned the two started arguing again in the front yard of the residence.  During the dispute Lloyd used a hand gun to shoot Lovett in the head.   When the victim fell to the ground the suspect shot her once more in the head and went back into his house while Lovett’s body lay mortally wounded outside.

Southwest Patrol officers took the suspect into custody without incident.  Los Angeles Paramedics responded and pronounced Lovett dead at the scene.

Both the victim and the suspect are described as African Americans

During the investigation detectives recovered a .45 caliber handgun that was at the residence.  

At this time the detectives say that the motivation for the crime stemmed from the argument.

Los Angeles: On Monday, May 17, 2010, Chief Charlie Beck, Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian, Council Member Tom LaBonge, MTA Board Member Rita Robinson and Metro CEO Art Leahy, gathered in front of the LAPD Police Administration Building to encourage motorists to safely share the road with bicyclists. The news conference promoted an array of activities taking place during “Bike Week LA”, including Blessing of the Bikes at Good Samaritan Hospital, Annual Downtown Bike Ride and free transit on Bike to Work Day.

Chief Beck reminded commuters to share the road with bicyclist “They are the most vulnerable of our commuters, it is important for motorist to watch out for bicyclist, give them the extra space, make them safe.”

Bike Week LA is part of a an annual week-long celebration with a serious purpose, get more commuter and other in Los Angeles County to bike to work and other destinations to reduce traffic and air pollution and save energy. LA Metro will be issuing a new bike map detailing more than 1,200 miles of bike paths, bikeways and bike lanes in Los Angeles County. Metro has also started a bicycle Roundtable series to create a dialogue with the cycling community and address pertinent issues such as bike safety.

2010 Safe & Sober Graduation Operation

Los Angeles:  Detective Support and Vice Division (DSVD), Operation ABC, with the assistance of Area Vice Unit personnel will initiate the 12th annual Safe & Sober Graduation Operation during the month of June 2010.  This project is designed to curtail the accessibility of alcoholic beverages and promote “safe and sober” graduations throughout the 89 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) high schools.  Between June 16 and July 1, 2010, an estimated 28,000 students will graduate from LAUSD high schools.  Based on past events, it is anticipated that many of these students will be celebrating this significant event in their young lives.  However, a number of them will be attempting to use alcoholic beverages as a means of enhancing their celebrations.  In an attempt to reduce the availability of alcoholic beverages to underage individuals and thereby save lives, vice units will be conducting a series of minor decoy and decoy shoulder tap operations coinciding with high school graduations in their respective areas.  

Beginning June 1, 2010, Area Vice Units will conduct minor decoy and decoy shoulder tap operations at licensed Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) locations in the proximity of LAUSD high schools.  On the weekend of June 19-20, 2010, Area Vice Units will be on maximum deployment and focus specifically on alcohol-related crime issues involving underage minors attempting to purchase alcoholic beverages via the minor decoy and decoy shoulder tap operations.  These operations are designed to inhibit the flow of alcoholic beverages at the two primary sources: licensed locations and the parking lots of these locations.  Surveys conducted by major universities indicate that approximately 75 percent of high school seniors have consumed an alcoholic beverage in the past six months.  Studies also indicate that 46 percent of these students will obtain the alcoholic beverage by soliciting adults outside of markets and liquor stores.  Shoulder tap operations are specifically designed to curtail this type of activity.

Operation ABC personnel are releasing this media advisory to alert those individuals likely to furnish alcoholic beverages to under-aged individuals, that the LAPD will be conducting undercover operations and will aggressively prosecute those individuals who knowingly put alcohol in the hands of a minor.  Shoulder tap operations, similar to minor decoy operations, involve the soliciting of individuals outside of licensed ABC retail establishments to purchase an alcoholic beverage for a minor.  Last year’s 2009 Safe & Sober Graduation Operation resulted in the solicitation of 737 adults, with 76 violations.  Statistically, 90 percent of all adults approached refused the minor decoys’ request for alcohol.  Additionally, 441 licensed ABC locations within close proximity of local high schools and colleges were inspected via the minor decoy program, which resulted in 82 clerks being cited for selling alcoholic beverages to underage individuals (representing an 81 percent compliance rate).  Individuals convicted of furnishing a minor with an alcoholic beverage face a mandatory $1000 fine and 24 hours of community service.

Subsequent Decoy Shoulder Tap Operations will be scheduled throughout the summer on a Citywide basis in order to curtail the accessibility of alcoholic beverages to minors and reduce alcohol-related crimes.

Gang Member Arrested For Brutal Stabbing Downtown

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles police officers arrested a 17-year-old gang member for the brutal stabbing of a homeless man last Saturday on Los Angeles Street.

“Turns out this was a random act of violence,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, who heads up detective operations for downtown.  “This 17-year-old was working overtime to establish himself as an enforcer with his gang.”

Last Saturday afternoon, the sidewalk on Los Angeles Street, near 5th Street, was packed with weekend and Mother’s Day shoppers when a group of men attacked another man in his thirties, beating him to the ground.  “That’s when this 17-year-old stepped in and stabbed the victim over a dozen times,” Lt. Vernon said.

The victim is a homeless man, living on Skidrow after being thrown out of the house by his family for drug use and domestic violence.  Doctors did not expect him to survive the attack, but now his prognosis is much improved.

Detectives received a number of anonymous tips from the neighborhood following the stabbing.  These tips led detectives to the main suspect, who is on probation for Car Jacking, and was recently arrested after taking police on a pursuit in downtown.  He was not detained.

Early this morning, around midnight, police officers assigned to the Central gang unit saw the 17 year old standing near 4th Street and Main Street, a block away from last weekend’s stabbing, and about a block away from where he had been arrested after the pursuit on Spring Street.

The juvenile was booked for Attempted Murder, and he is now being held at Eastlake Juvenile Hall.  Juveniles are detained without bail.

“We’re still looking for other suspects in this attack,” Lt. Vernon explained.  “One good thing to come out of this, we have been able to identify more members of  the gang the suspect is associated with.  Their brutal act has brought a lot of police attention on the block and on them.  I hope this is the tipping point for more people to say ‘enough’ to their intimidation.”

LAPD Arrests Three Murder Suspects

Los Angeles: Three suspects have been arrested in a murder investigation that occurred in South Los Angeles on March 27, 2010.  

On May 11, Los Angeles Police Department gang and narcotic detectives arrested Chenoby Russell, 19, and James Evans, 18.  On May 13, a third suspect identified as Deanthony Miller, 19 was also arrested.  All three suspects are from Los Angeles and have been charged with murder and attempted murder.

According to investigators, 18-year-old Kendall Williams and a male companion stood on a sidewalk in front of an apartment building in the 900 block of West 68th Street with a group of friends.  A black Nissan Maxima with tinted windows pulled up and stopped in the middle of the street.  The front passenger inside the vehicle pulled out a handgun, opened fire and struck both Williams and her companion. A Metropolitan Division patrol unit observed the shooting and chased the vehicle toward 66th near Kansas Streets where the suspects bailed out of the car.  Police set up a perimeter, but the suspects were able to escape.

Paramedics rushed both victims to California Hospital where Williams died the next day.  The other victim was treated for a gunshot wound to his leg and released.

Fatal Hit-and-Run

Los Angeles:   The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is requesting the public’s help to identify and locate the suspect responsible for a hit-and-run traffic accident that caused the death of 33-year-old Eugene Jackson, a resident of Los Angeles.

On May 15, 2010, at around 1:30 a.m., a motorist driving a 2004, Silver Dodge Durango Sports Utility Vehicle was traveling southbound on Figueroa Street at 135th Street when it failed to stop for a red traffic signal.  The SUV collided into a 2009, Nissan Altima that was traveling eastbound on 135th Street at Figueroa.  The driver and the passengers of the SUV exited their vehicle and fled the scene without rendering aid or indentifying themselves.  The driver and the passengers are described as Hispanics, 2 males and 1 female.

The victim Eugene Jackson was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Toddler Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver

Los Angeles:   The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is requesting the public’s help to identify and locate a suspect responsible for a hit-and-run traffic accident that seriously injured a 2-year-old boy.

On May 14, 2010, at around 10 p.m., a family was attending a church service at the 6100 block of South Figueroa Street.  At the conclusion of the church service, the family’s 2-year-old child ran into the street.  The child was then struck by a motorist driving an older model blue, Toyota  Corolla that was traveling southbound on Figueroa Street toward 62nd Street.  The driver of the Toyota continued southbound on Figueroa, then eastbound on 62nd Street.  The driver failed to stop and render aid or identify himself as required by law.  The driver is described as a male Hispanic.

The toddler was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Doughnut Shop Armed Robber Sought Images Caught on Tape

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a man who robbed a doughnut store at gunpoint on May 4, 2010, in the Mid-City area of Los Angeles.

At around 1:45 a.m., a man walked into the shop located in the 1700 block of Western Avenue.  The man was carrying a “tec-9” type gun, confronted a male employee and demanded money.  The suspect took the money from the cash register and ordered the employee down to the ground.  The robber escaped on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.  No one was injured during this incident.

The gunman is described as a male African American.  He stands about 6 feet tall and weighs 220 pounds.  He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jean pants and black shoes.  He was also wearing black gloves.

LAPD Detective Arrested for Embezzlement of Public Funds

Los Angeles:    On May 13, 2010, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) investigators from the department’s Professional Standards Bureau arrested 45-year-old Leonard Avalos.  Avalos is a 17-year veteran of the LAPD, currently assigned to the Southwest Detective Division.  

The arrest was made without incident on Thursday evening while Avalos was off duty in the City of Placentia.  

Avalos was booked at the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail Facility on a felony arrest warrant for a single count of embezzlement and six counts of grand theft.  Bail was set at $120,000.  

Avalos is the subject of both criminal and administrative investigations.  His duty status will be "assigned to home" pending the conclusion of the investigations.   

The case continues to be a collaborative effort between the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s, Bureau of Investigations, their Justice System Integrity Division and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Operations Division.
