• Police Commission Vice President John Mack said he attended a symposium held by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives at USC last week. He said it was a good event with outstanding honorees.
• Police Commissioner Robert Saltzman stated he visited Southwest and Olympic divisions last week to view the location of call centers, drafts and foreign language plans for the new front desk and foreign language centers. He said the project was still a work in progress but could tell a good amount of thought has gone into it so far.
• Police Commissioner Rafael Bernardino attended the LAPD Muslim Forum with fellow Commissioner Richard Drooyan. He said Commander Michael Williams gave a good presentation on the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and mentioned the forum was his first time attending an event of that nature.
• Police Chief Charlie Beck thanked the Commissioners for attending the various Department events and said it was an example of the important role the civilian oversight committee plays in community relations. Chief Beck then said the overall crime rates in the City are down for the first quarter of the year.
• The verbal presentation and update from the Commanding Officer and Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) representative regarding community initiated problem solving, crime strategies, and other programs and goals within the Hollywood Area was given by Captain Beatrice Girmala. Captain Girmala stated the Hollywood C-PAB have various sub-committees that change depending on community needs. Current committees include emergency preparedness, Hollywood Area Softroom – a safe storage place for homeless people in transition, “Chapter Two”- a nightclub security campaign, Police Cadets, Junior Cadets and Hollywood PAL.
• The Inspector General’s report, dated March 12, 2013, relative to the Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) Audit, as given by Inspector General Alexander Bustamante, was approved. Inspector General Bustamante informed the board the audit of the SAR’s program looked at a four month window after Special Order No. 1 went into effect. He said he met with community members and community groups six to seven times in order to offer a layer of transparency. The audit found the report to be properly completed and adequately maintained.
• The Department’s report, dated March 15, 2013, relative to the supplemental police account fourth quarterly report (October through December 2012) was approved and transmitted to the City Council.
