The Daily News commented on Wednesday that the LAPD does a poor job of combating gang related crime. I have to agree. Far to often the LAPD waits to target a specific gang like the Vineland Boyz, only after they murder a fellow officer. If the Department was more proactive in targeting (taskforce style) gangs like the Vineland Boyz, all crime numbers would be dramaticly reduced. Instead we have RACER Div, the "COMSTAT" Div, and on and on.

What happened to Chief Hillman being named as the 'Gang Czar'??
What has he done to improve/beef-up the area gang units?
Nothing, that's what.
But like the other blogger Larry said, the dept. has beefed-up or invented non-enforcement units such as RACR, CON-STAT unit, PSB, EES, CRID, FID.
So when the public is calling 877-ask-lapd for their 'quality of life' concerns, LAPD continues to have a 1 to 3 hr ETA on non-emergency calls.
If you look at the creation of the last few units/divisions, the LAPD is more interested in CYA and investigating Officers.
No wonder why LAPD cops don't live in the city, they know how dangerous and underpoliced the city really is.

You can add the 'Blog Unit' next to that one too, right LT?

Somewhat interesting, somewhat puffy profile of Bill Bratton in Sunday's New York Times.
Here's a link:

Several mentions of his inability to stay in Los Angeles for even a week at a time. Ink is also devoted to a decline in crime statistics.
On a side note, I notice once again with these Compstat stats that robbery is still climbing. It has risen with every single one of these reports.

AC, you seem to have all the answers. There is no Blog Unit, but I do work out of the Public Information Office.

Lt. I believe Al C. was probably making a joke.

I agree with Mr/Mrs Calhoun, in regard to the number of LAPD officers who live outside of the City limits. It's unfortunate that I see more Traffic Division Motorcops on the 14 freeway each day than I see on City streets.

What are we going to do when the LAPD crumbles. Who is going to build it back up? If their are no changes then their will be no changes in crime. officers know it and move out of town! Chief Knows it so he leaves out of town. This blog is created so we can complain, discuss, and report and read about the LAPD...but are we just entertaining ourselves while the TRUTH is buried deeper and deeper!!

Most of us signed up to fight crime and put bad guys in jail. But the unfortunate truth is that a few rotten apples put us in the position of being under a Consent Decree. Most of the entities derided above are a result of the Consent Decree. Instead of complaining about them, we should be working hard to achieve and maintain compliance. Then they can be downsized (they will never go away completely), and the officers there can go back to the field.
As for living out of the city, I lived in the city until I noticed that the kid bagging my groceries was the same gangmember I put in Juvenile Hall the night before.

Considering the housing prices within LA city limits, where are LAPDers going to live, particularly younger officers at the lower pay scales?
You can't buy even an entry level in any decent LA neighborhood for under $500K. That means a buyer must earn at least $165K to buy a very small, entry level house in the north Valley.
Add a typical LAPD salary with an average second income, and that $165K minimum will not likely be crossed. So potential LAPD homebuyers within LA city limits are priced out of the market. If the LAPD officer is the only wage-earner, that makes homeownership all the more difficult.
I live in the Sunland/Tujunga area, which has a very low crime rate, low smog levels, and with decent housing prices (compared to the rest of LA), but you still can't buy in now at under $550K. We have some LAPD who live in our area, but most bought before prices went out of their reach. We're commutable to the Valley, Hollywood, and downtown but not to the 310 area, so even if someone could afford here, the commute is absurd to the Westside.
It would be great to have more LAPD living within the city limits, but that's just not economically very feasible.

Algonquin and Larry Dolly. The posts you two make, to us community members, tell us how myopic your view of life is. Don't tell me, you both probably have never worked more than a few divisions in your "career"? Probably couldn't do anything else other than what you do.... too bad I pay your salary.
