Violent Dog Dies After Charging Police

Los Angeles: An officer fired his weapon at a charging dog after attempts to subdue the animal with pepper spray and a taser proved unsuccessful.  The dog did not survive.

On Thursday, October 26, 2006, around 2:45 P.M., police responded to a vicious animal call in the 1800 block of Talmadge Street, in the Hollywood area.  A concerned citizen had phoned 9-1-1 after seeing a woman, who was walking her own dog in the neighborhood, being chased by two pit bulls.  When officers arrived, they encountered both aggressive animals.

As police attempted to secure the dogs behind a gate at 1871 Talmadge, one pit bull became increasingly violent.  Efforts to use pepper spray and a taser to control the animal did not succeed.  When the dog continued charging police, Officer Jaime Rousett, 34, 11 years with the Department, fired two rounds from his handgun, striking the dog both times.  Although hit, the dog continued to advance toward Officer Rousett and his partner.  Rousett fired again, hitting the dog twice in the body and once in the head.  The dog died at the scene.

Neither officer was injured in the incident.

Questions may be directed to Media Relations Section at 213-485-3586.

What? The dog was just using the necessary force to subdue the officers but let me just ask this. Could the dog breath? If he was barking he could breath therefore necessary force was necessary by LE.
These two pitbulls were career "bullies" that ran with the blvd bulldogs gang, they have been feuding with the Hollywood Hellcats over turf in this area, one was wanted on a felony charge for humping an old mans leg.
These dog were armed and rabid. The proper action from le was taken.

I wonder how long until the animal rights activisits start screaming police brutality?

wheres the video????? Will it come out in about a year/year and a half!!!!!

Let me guess...PITA is going to protest, then IA is going to investigate. THEN a BOR (board of rights) for the shooting will occur. The officers will be put on admin leave pending the board. During all of this, there will be a video published by "you tube". Then the city is going to settle with PITA (quietly). Or am I wrong? I must be wrong...THAT HAS NEEVR HAPPENED BEFORE!?!?!

I thought it was routine for most law enforcement agencies to initiate internal investigations any time an officer discharged their firearm. Is the LAPD different? Don't they also investigate shootings of animals?

As Lt. Vernon recently posted on another topic, animal shootings and negligent discharges are handled by the involved employee's division of assignment. If the shooting is determined to be in policy, there will be no Internal Affairs investigation. To me, the shooting is completely justified and proper. The owner of the dog should be cited for failing to maintain control of the animal.

Jhon Doe, the correct term is PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). A pita is a type of bread.

Welcome to the correct grammar and oranization name school of "Police girl" who loves to exercise her condesending and belittling tone even off duty!

Sara,

My point was to answer Clock Watcher's question if the shooting would be investigated. However, I couldn't pass up correcting Jhon Doe, who can't even seem to spell his own name right. I'm guessing you spelled organization and condescending wrong just to bait me? Congratulations, it worked.

copskid had it right - pita - pain in the axx
