In a ceremony held at the Van Nuys Airport, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and members from the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), Department of General Services, Los Angeles World Airports and the Department of Water and Power ushered in the new Air Operations, Air Support and Helicopter Maintenance Facility. This new facility will serve as the primary maintenance facility for these five city department’s airships.
Built with the bond money from the voter approved Proposition F in November of 2000, this new state-of-the-art facility boasts a 40,000 square foot indoor aircraft hanger, capable of handling up to six large helicopters. It also houses a working fire station and will provide a wide range of emergency services to the visitors, operators, aircraft, and pilots/passengers that use the Van Nuys Airport as their base of operation.
The ceremony included static displays of both old and new airships from the Department and the LAFD, a four ship fly-by and a LAFD Water Drop and crash scenario. Free food, facility tours, music and children’s activities made this a true family event.
I went to this after the Memorial Relay. The black and white helicopters on display looked really nice up close. They look just like the police cars as the picture shows.
The LAPD and the LAFD put on a great show. Thanks to all those involved.
