May 19, 2025 – In a ceremony held at the Elysian Park Police Academy Rock Garden the seven recipients
of the 2010 Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation Merit Scholarship were recognized and given their award. The recipients, who are all children of LAPD employees, posed for pictures with Chief Beck and took the opportunity to thank the Foundation for their generous gift.
This year’s winners are Jillian Becerra, Kirin Escher, Hunter Jones, Bryan Kitchener, Andrew Mayeda, Carly Paris, and Rivkah Schefres.
The principal criterion in this contest is academic performance but extra-curricular achievement is also taken into consideration. This year more than 80 students applied with 11 semi-finalists and 11 finalists receiving a one-time monetary grant. The seven 2010 winners receive $5,000 annually for four years of university study.
The primary mission of the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation is to assist LAPD families experiencing catastrophic circumstances resulting from death or injury. Since its inception in 1972, the Foundation has distributed nearly $12 million in financial assistance, including college grants for the surviving children of officer killed in the line of duty.
