Robbery Suspect Caught on Video

Los Angeles:  Devonshire Division Robbery detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead to the arrest of a suspect wanted for committing robbery in Granada Hills.

On July 31, 2013, around 9:30 p.m., a suspect entered the Taco Bell located at 11000 block of Woodley Avenue,  approached the counter and engaged the clerk in conversation by asking for directions.  The suspect then gave the employee a note demanding money from the cash register and showed the clerk a handgun in his waistband.  The suspect received an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register then left location on foot. 

The suspect is described as a male Black between 30 to 35-years-old, who stands 6’ to 6’2” tall and weighs between 190 and 200 pounds.  Detectives remind the public that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Suspects Challenge Store Clerk to a Fight Before Stealing Merchandise

Los Angeles:  Robbery Detectives from Hollywood Division are asking for the public’s help to provide information that will lead to the identification and arrest of suspects wanted for robbery.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2013, around 8:30 p.m., four suspects entered an open CVS Store located in the 1700 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard.  Once inside, one of the suspects distracted an employee while another suspect selectively removed merchandise from the shelves.  That suspect then hid the items under his clothing.  When the employee approached the suspect, two additional suspects confronted the employee and challenged her to fight. One of the suspects physically bumped the store clerk then all the suspects started screaming and yelling at the employee, demanding that she sell them alcohol.  The suspects then left the location on foot with the stolen merchandise.    

Suspect-1 is described as a male Black, 16 to 20-years-old, standing 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 150 to 160 pounds. 

Suspect-2 is described as a male Black, 16 to 20-years-old, standing around 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing around 130 pounds.

Suspect-3 is described as a female Black with brown hair, 16 to 20-years-old, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 190-200 pounds.

Suspect-4 is described as a female Black light brown/blond hair, standing 5 feet 7 to 8 inches tall and weighing 140-150 pounds,

Notes from the August 13, 2024 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

• Police Commission President Andrea Ordin said she attended the National Night Out event at Stoner Park with some of the city’s elected officials on-hand as well.  She said awards were given to volunteers of the Department and there was a good turn-out at the event she attended.  President Ordin added after the Superior Court decision regarding Special Order 7, the Board will put the issue on next week’s agenda to discuss in closed session.

• Police Commission Vice President John Mack attended the National Night Out event at Olympic Division.  He said it was a great event with a great turn-out which reflected the diversity of the City.

• Police Commissioner Robert Saltzman said he was honored to speak at the police recruit academy graduation last Friday.  He said it was also the first recruit graduation attended by new Mayor Eric Garcetti.

• Police Commissioner Rafael Bernardino stated he attended the National Night Out event at Hollywood Division.  He said there was a good turn-out at the event with a number of public servants on-hand.

• Assistant Chief Sandy Jo MacArthur informed the Board the judge in the Special Order 7 ruling issued a stay so the Department would be conducting business as usual.  She added the Department is working closely with the City Attorney on the matter going forward.

• The Department’s report, dated July 30, 2013, relative to the request for proposals for the community online reporting and report distribution services, as given by Chief Information Officer Maggie Goodrich, was approved.  Ms. Goodrich informed the Board the Department is working on developing a system where the public will have the ability to file certain types of reports online.  The Department is also working on being able to distribute reports, such as traffic collision reports, online as well.  Ms. Goodrich said the system is still a few months away. 

LAPD Makes An Arrest In Connection With Unsolved 1990 Robbery/Murder:

Los Angeles: On August 12, 2013, LAPD detectives arrested 42-year-old Marcus Perkins for the 1990 murder of Timoteo Pena.

The victim, Timoteo Pena, was the owner of “Sinaloa Meat and Grocery Market” located in the 5600 block of San Pedro Street. On July 24, 1990, Pena was working at the market with his young daughter, when he was shot and killed during an apparent robbery. During the commission of the crime, Pena armed himself with his own handgun and exchanged gunshots with his assailant. After hearing multiple gunshots, witnesses in the neighborhood saw the suspect fleeing the area in a small, green, compact vehicle. Pena was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that same evening, Marcus Perkins’s identity and possible involvement was brought to the detectives’ attention when Perkins was admitted into Daniel Freeman Hospital with a gunshot wound. Perkins denied being responsible for the murder of Timoteo Pena.

However, circumstantial evidence suggested otherwise. Unfortunately, detectives were unable to uncover any additional witnesses or physical evidence to support an arrest and/or criminal filing and Pena’s murder went unsolved for over 23 years.

In 2011, detectives from Robbery-Homicide Division reviewed the Pena case and discovered physical evidence remained in police custody. This evidence, which was examined for the presence of DNA, forensically linked Marcus Perkins to the Pena crime scene.

After a lengthy investigation into Marcus Perkins’s background, detectives discovered that in 1990 and then again in 1994, Perkins was arrested for committing similar-type robberies. Pursuant to his 1994 arrest, Perkins was convicted and sentenced to 23 years in state prison. Perkins was released from custody during 2013 after serving a majority of this lengthy prison sentence.

Catering Truck Robbery Suspects Sought

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department Olympic Area Robbery detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying two robbery suspects caught on surveillance video robbing catering truck employees.

On Thursday, August 1, 2013, at 2:10 a.m., three employees of MCD Catering were working in their truck parked in the 2000 block of West Venice Boulevard, in the Olympic area. The employees saw a white Toyota Corolla driving slowly down West Venice Boulevard before making a U-turn and parking on the street. Two suspects exited the vehicle.

As the suspects approached the catering truck, one of them demanded money. He reached into his waist band, removed a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the victims.  The suspects took the victims money and then entered their vehicle, a 2009-2013 white 4-door Toyota Corolla with paper plates with red lettering, and drove southbound on Roosevelt Avenue.

First suspect is described as a male Hispanic 35-40 year old with black hair and brown eyes. He stands 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing army camouflaged pants and shirt.

Second suspect is described as a male Hispanic, between 19-25 year old with black hair and unknown eye color. He stands between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs about 170-180 pounds.
