At a news conference today, Chief Beck joined Mayor Garcetti, city officials, city council members and many others at City Hall to raise awareness about and help end domestic violence. Chief Beck expressed great concern that spousal abuse is up 18 percent this year, which means there are 1,300 more documented cases of domestic violence so far in 2014 as compared to last year.
He went on to call domestic violence a cause for a “broken society” and a “conspiracy of silence,” referring to a known tendency for such crimes to go unreported. Finally, Chief Beck reassured everyone that LAPD is committed to make a difference, pointing out there are domestic violence task forces in 13 of the Department’s 21 Areas, with a goal of establishing them in all Areas.
