Once again, a dog proved to be man’s best friend when one of the LAPD’s bloodhounds recently assisted officers in locating an impaired elderly man who was missing.
On June 13, 2015, an 83-year-old man living in a Rampart Division neighborhood, suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other medical conditions, wandered away from his residence shortly after 8:30 a.m. By 9 a.m., officers had received a radio call about the missing man, and the search began. After an unsuccessful grid search in the area, officers called the Department’s Gang and Narcotics Division K-9 unit for assistance.
In no time, the bloodhound, known as Sage (serial# 197), arrived on the scene ready to take action with help from the subject’s family who provided a shirt the man was wearing earlier that morning. Sage quickly picked up the man’s scent from the clothing and began zigzagging through residential streets and major boulevards. Finally, Sage directed officers to Bonnie Brae and Temple Streets where the subject was seated on a retaining wall about two miles from his residence.
Gently, Sage touched the man. Completely disoriented and confused, the subject thought he was in El Salvador and couldn’t remember his name, but officers were able to identify him with a photograph.
Officers rewarded Sage for a job well done with a tasty morsel of food, a small price to pay for Sage’s expertise and the relief his efforts brought to the subject’s daughter, who had been crying hysterically. With the utmost gratitude, she thanked every officer at the command post.
