La Ranchera 930AM
On Tuesday September 9, 2008, Humberto Luna, Spanish radio personality of La Ranchera 930AM, was paid a visit by several LAPD officers. Chief Sergio Diaz, along with Officers Gilberto Murillo and Pete Arguetta, South Traffic Division, and Sergeant Xavier Nuñez and Officer Victor Islas, Central Traffic Division, were present to thank Humberto Luna for his commitment to helping the Department educate and inform the Hispanic community on important and vital public safety topics.
Since August 2006, Mr. Luna has provided the Department with a weekly segment, inviting LAPD traffic officers to call into Mr. Luna’s live morning show and provide listeners with important traffic safety information. Mr. Luna has also welcomed Department personnel into the studio to talk about holiday DUI, Halloween, Thanksgiving and holiday shopping safety tips, identity theft and gun fire reduction.
Chief Diaz presented certificates of appreciation to Mr. Luna, co-host Nelvi Palma and morning show producer Fernando Lescano. Chief Diaz, Officers Murillo, Arguetta, and Islas have all been guests of the show. Officer Luis Jose Hernandez, South Traffic Division, was Mr. Luna’s first guest when the segment began.
These media interviews are scheduled by the Public Relations Unit, Public Information Office, and are part of the media campaigns established with Spanish language media outlets to help connect the communication bridge between the Department and the Hispanic community.
Are there also efforts to educate and inform specifically white, asian, black or native american "communities" on important and vital public safety issues?
Sad to see the LAPD further pander to ethnic tribalists and identity politics.
Ever visited a Chinese or Korean radio station?

Oh Gosh! It's like they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. First, people complain that the spanish speaking communities don't try to assimilate to our laws and ways of living, then when there is something positive like this, people complain that there is too much attention by the LAPD towards educating them. It's just like everything else in life I guess, you can't please everybody.

Yes, the Department actually has visited Chinese and Korean radio stations and is in partnership with the Nation's leading Asian language television station LA 18 to feature LAPD officers providing vital public safety information in the viewers/listeners' native language. Currently, the Department has recurring segments in Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog and Vietnamese and has been featured in Japanese, Cantonese and Korean media. The Department is attempting to expand its foreign language public service campaign to include several other languages as well. With personnel capable of speaking well over fifty different languages, the LAPD is truly dedicated to serving the diverse communities it serves.
