Officer Randal Simmons Fundraiser at Burger King

Burger_king_017 At 6:00 am this morning, the Burger King at the corner of West Cesar Chavez Avenue and Grand Avenue opened its doors to raise funds for the LAPD Family once again.  100% of today’s proceeds will go directly to the family of Officer Randy Simmons, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in the early hours of Thursday, February 7, 2008, when he and his SWAT team members responded to a call of an armed suspect barricaded inside a residence.

Burger King staff are hard at work taking orders from police officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies, City employees, and community members who been continually arriving throughout the day showing their financial and emotional support.

Television and radio morning shows continued their passionate coverage on the tragic death of OfficerBurger_king_018_2 Randy Simmons by enthusiastically announcing today’s fundraiser on their newscasts.

This fundraiser is made possible by the Cimm’s Inc. that is owned by Laurence and Ralph Cimmarusti, brothers who have a long history of supporting and fundraising for the LAPD.
They have a personal connection with the law enforcement community, as their brother in-law is retired after 40 years of service as an LAPD officer. Cimm’s Inc. owns and operates more than 50 Burger King restaurants in California and Texas and has been a franchisee of Burger King Corporation for more than 30 years.

Burger_king_019 Two years ago Laurence and Ralph Cimmarusti held this same fundraiser for Officer Landon Dorris, Northeast Area, who was killed in the line of duty when he was struck by a vehicle while investigating a minor traffic collision.

Detectives Alert Community

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department detectives alert the community to a recent increase in burglary and theft from motor vehicles in the Northeast area of the city .

The thefts involve property being removed from a vehicle, especially GPS systems, I-Pods, MP-3 players and laptop computers.  The items are left inside the vehicles in plain view and unfortunately thieves use this opportunity to remove the property.  The vehicles are often times unlocked or the windows are rolled partially down.  The suspects have also been known to smash the vehicle’s window to gain access to the items.  The victim not only suffers the loss of property but is also faced with the cost of expensive repairs for damages to the vehicle.

Members of the community are reminded to keep valuables out of plain view. Never leave a GPS or its cradle on the dash or where it is visible from outside of the vehicle. Car owners should also use some type of anti-theft device, such as an alarm system, and park in a well-illuminated area when possible.  Serial numbers for electronic devices, laptop computers and GPS systems should always be written down and kept for future reference. Another tip is to affix devices with an identifying number such as a driver’s license number.

Internet Prowler Arrested for Sex with a Minor

Los Angeles: Los Angeles detectives arrested an accountant from Camarillo after hotel security and firefighters discovered a drunk 15-year-old boy in the man’s downtown hotel suite Saturday night. The man and the boy met on Craigslist. Detectives have released the man’s photograph, seeking other victims.

“This man drove all the way from Camarillo to East Los Angeles to meet a young boy he merely knew from the internet,” said Lieutenant Paul Vernon, head of LAPD Central Detective Division. “Willing or not, children under 18 years old cannot give consent for sexual relations. This is a very serious crime.”

Late Saturday night, a couple at the Bonaventure Hotel downtown, complained to security because of noise in the adjoining room. Security investigated and asked the tenants to quiet down. The registered guest, Richard Willrodt, 48, was in the company of a younger man, and promised to keep the noise down. A short time later, security responded again, as did the fire department, after Willrodt’s companion had passed out from apparent alcohol consumption.

“Once inside the room, paramedics realized the young man was under age and they called for police,” Vernon said.

Police officers detained Willrodt and took him to the police station. Following questioning, detectives arrested Willrodt for Lewd and Lascivious Acts with a Minor, a very serious felony crime. His bail was set at $20,000.

Detectives seized Willrodt’s laptop computer in the room as well as other items that showed his intent for sexual relations.

The boy was examined at a local hospital and released to his guardian.

“This case should be a loud wake-up call to parents to monitor and limit their children’s activity on the internet,” Vernon added. “We are releasing Willrodt’s photograph in the event he may have contacted other children in similar rendezvous.

Anyone with information related to this case should call Detective Thayer Lake at 213-972-1226, or call the LAPD Hotline any time at 1-877-LAWFULL (529-3855).
